Green Terminology

Green has become one of the most important issues in the cleaning industry.The following
are some of the key terms.

Green
The definition comes from Presidential Executive order 13101 and defines it as " Products or Services" that reduce the health and environmental impacts compared to similiar products and services used for the same purpose.

Green Cleaning
Defined as cleaning that protects without harming the environment. Green cleaning includes all products used in the cleaning process including preventative methods such as entrance mats, along with appropriate procedures and staffing levels. It is an overall goal of creating healthy high performing buildings with minimal impacts on the environment.

Greenwashing
Describes green advertising, labeling, and other sales or promotional activities that use misleading, vague, irrelevent or unsubstansiated environmental claims to sell a product or service.

Sustainability
Coined in 1987 with the publication of the World Commission on Environment and Development report, " Our Common Future". This document defined sustainable development that neets the needs of the present without compromising the the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Triple Bottom Line
John Elkington coined this phrase in 1994, suggesting that organizations can't solely focus on profits, but must also consider it's impact on people and the planet.

Certification
The process by which a third party, typically a non profit evalautes a product according to a specific standard to certify that a product meets the stated requirements.

Self Certification
A process by which a manufacturerer relies only on it's own testing to claim that their product is green.

Leed
An acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, LEED is a series of "Rating Systems" that define the construction of new buildings, operations and maintenance, schools, interiors and other aspects of buildings. LEED is a product of the U.S. Green Building Council.
